Who is Will Ferrell?

John William Ferrell is an American actor, comedian, producer, and writer who was born on July 16, 1967. He rose to prominence as a cast member on the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live in the mid-1990s, and has since appeared in many comedy films.

Betty Kay (a teacher), and Roy Lee Ferrell, Jr. (an artist), raised John William Ferrell in Irvine, California. His parents were born and raised in the North Carolina town of Roanoke Rapids.

Ferrell, a University of Southern California graduate, developed an interest in performing as a student at University High School in Irvine, where he used masked voices to make his school’s regular morning announcements over the public address system.

He began his career as a member of the Groundlings, a Los Angeles comedy/improv group, where he met fellow cast members Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph, and former Saturday Night Live (1975) repertory players Laraine Newman, Jon Lovitz, and Phil Hartman.

He met Chris Kattan there, and the two became fast friends, later appearing on Saturday Night Live (1975). During his time at The Groundlings, he appeared in many television shows, including Strangers with Candy (1999), Grace Under Fire (1993), and Living Single (1993). 

Will also voiced the armless and legless father of “The Oblongs,” a cartoon family. During the rapid recasting of Saturday Night Live (1975), he became a feature cast member in 1995. During his first season, he was dubbed “perhaps the worst cast member ever.” 

However, his impersonation skills and wide variety of characters propelled him to become perhaps the greatest Saturday Night Live cast member ever. He was one of the few cast members to be nominated for an Emmy for a performance during his seven-year career, and he played George W. Bush during the 2000 presidential election. 

Since his debut on the show in 1995, he has appeared in every Saturday Night Live (1975) film. He quit Saturday Night Live (1975) in 2002, and was the only cast member to ever receive a farewell from the entire current cast at the season finale broadcast. 

Will has pursued a career in film since leaving the show. He married Viveca Paulin in 2000 and now lives in Los Angeles.
